Carnival Epsilon began with little more than two performers, a banner, and a desire to do more. Marcus Epsilon is a difficult man to summarize briefly, but if one had to it would be fair to say that he will always look at today and try and figure out how to make tomorrow bigger, riskier, and more entertaining.
From a deep-seated admiration for the entertainment of the traveling sideshow and an appreciation for the innovation inherent within the emerging steampunk subculture, Carnival Epsilon exists to subvert expectations and remake the ordinary into the extraordinary. Carnival Epsilon is one of the last active traveling sideshows touring within the United States, striving to keep alive the rich history of audience interaction and live performances which the sideshow tradition embodies.
But tradition cannot be the soul aim of an endeavor, lest it begin to feel immediately dated, so Carnival Epsilon also embraces the influence of steampunk, immediately reinventing the performance within the context of Victorian Science Fiction, allowing the performance to remain rooted in the Victorian tradition where sideshows were much more commonplace while embracing the technological aspect to modernize the experience and prevent it from feeling forced to live in the past.
While it would be impossible to provide a list of every act that would be available, due to the continuous need to defy expectation and the continual drive to improve and renew, many of the most memorable acts are detailed below.
From the horrifying to the humorous, Carnival Epsilon mixes suspense and daring with bits of magic and mirth, breaking the tension and allowing each act to build upon its own merit.
What is the best way to upstage William Tell? Carnival Epsilon's response is to take a chainsaw to an apple! An actual steampunk'ed chainsaw slices into the skin of an apple held precariously within the mouth of one of the performers!
And once the sawing is complete, there is a tasty apple to eat, but how would eating an apple possibly qualify as defying convention? No, there is nothing entertaining or unexpected about eating an apple, so Carnival Epsilon punches it up a bit, taking a light-bulb out of a working socket and opting to eat that instead!
How do they do it? Well, it takes a mighty strong mouth to be able to accept all that glass, so the sideshow can also give guests a sneak peak into the training regimen which gave rise to their mouth's resilience, sticking their tongues into either the whirling blades of a fan or into a mousetrap!
But it isn't only their mouths that have been toughened against the rigors of the real world, nearly every part of their bodies have become unaffected by pain, as they can also demonstrate by dancing across broken glass, or by sewing a button to their own chest!
And if some concerned onlooker grows to wary of the performer's well-being and opts to call in authorities to protect them from themselves? Well not to worry, the troupe is accomplished of slipping out of all manner of restraints, which they'll be happy to demonstrate!
As mentioned, this is but a brief verbal montage of their performances. Above all else, Carnival Epsilon strives to reinvent and continually improve upon the entertainment and experiences its audiences leave the show with
