I can sing Gospel music, Soul/R&B, Jazz/Blues,...music that can move you emotionally. I put my whole self in my performances, so much so that they aren't "performances," but spirit moving, life changing, love-enveloping, honest engagements.
Born in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, NY, and raised both in Brooklyn and in Franklinton, NC, Michele L. Egerton began performing before audiences at the tender age of 4 in churches in Franklinton. She continues to sing for the Lord until this very day.
A graduate of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (the FAME school) in NYC, Michele began her professional acting career in 2000 performing as "Sista" in the AUDELCO award winning African American version of the musical DAMN YANKEES, directed by Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj at the Paul Robeson Theater in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, NYC.
Later that year, she starred as "Lena 'Mama' Younger" in A RAISIN IN THE SUN in the AmeriCulture Arts Festival in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, cast by the artistic director (and director of RAISIN) Kelly Morgan, from word of mouth of her successful performance in DAMN YANKEES in New York. Being in RAISIN afforded Michele the opportunity to atend Fitchburg State University (then Fitchburg State College) thanks to Mr. Morgan (who later became her mentor), who is a professor there. She received a Bachelors of Science degree in English/Theater in 2006, graduating Magna Cum Laude.
Other roles Michele has been in while attending Fitchburg State are "Mrs. Gibbs" in OUR TOWN (directed by James B. Nicola), "Felicity" in THE SHADOWBOX (directed by Ellen "Cap" Corduan), THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES, "Lucy P. Smith" in THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR, the female version of Tom Griffin's work THE BOYS NEXT DOOR (directed by Morgan, for which she was nominated for the 2004 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship, and became a finalist), "Juror #11" in 12 ANGRY JURORS, the multicultural version of Reginald Rose's 12 ANGRY MEN (directed by Morgan, for which she was nominated for the 2005 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship), and as the symbiotic "Jazz Singer" in SUMMER AND SMOKE (directed by Elliot Norton Award winning actor Richard McElvain). She'd won the 2005 Kennedy Center ACTF Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Award - Region 1, and, nationally, The Mark Twain Comedy Acting Award - 1st prize.
After graduating from Fitchburg State, she starred again as "Lena 'Mama' Younger" in Salem State College's production of A RAISIN IN THE SUN, directed by David Allen George; as "Sister Mary Hubert" in the musical revue NUNSENSATIONS (part of the NUNSENSE franchise), at the Broadway Palms Dinner Theater for producer Brian Enzman, in Ft. Myers, FL; worked as a drama teacher, and a performer for the Cornerstone Performing Arts Center (then known as the Christian Performing Arts Center), in Fitchburg, MA, for then artistic director Jen Potts, in such productions as IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE as "Clarence the Angel," DO LORD REMEMBER ME as "Actress #1," FACES OF EVE, and A TALE OF THREE TREES; and worked for such greats as Judith Malina in her workshop production of "Not In My Name" in NYC, Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones in his 2007 Off-Broadway workshop of the 2010 Tony Award winning Broadway show FELA! as "Fumilayo Anikulapo Kuti," and working for Dolly Parton at her Pigeon Forge, TN theme park, Dollywood, in the 50's-60's musical revue "Dreamland Drive-In" as "Bertha." She returned to MA after a long illness, unable to perform at Dollywood any longer.
She returned to the stage in January, 2011 at a stage reading of a new play, SON, at the Kennedy Center ACTF - Region 1, at the behest of her mentor, Mr. Morgan, who was acting chairman. In September, 2011, Michele faced a new challenge - acting in a Shakespearean play - after Mr. McElvain graciously cast her as "The Nurse" in ROMEO & JULIET, at her alma mater Fitchburg State University, which closed in November 2011, with the production receiving high praise.
Currently, she has been in the works of development of a one-woman musical show based on the life of Ada "Bricktop" Smith-DuConge with playwright Michael Sulsona and director Judith Lindstedt, and she has been performing as an actress in films, as a background actress in the films The Heat starring Sandra Bullock & Melissa McCarthy, and in American Hustle starring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, & Jennifer Lawrence. She is a featured actress in an upcoming film coming out later this year.
Though she sings daily, she misses being onstage performing before an audience.
I am willing to work with the techies (be it that I was trained as one, myself) to work anything out that is suitable for me.
