While I am very adaptable in style, I gravitate toward creating dramatic portraits that incorporate the depth and beauty of the environment while keeping my subjects prominent. I enjoy the full breadth of photographic responsibilities, including capturing the candid shots photojournalistically at an event, and giving great attention to the detail shots. During portrait sessions, I do whatever is needed -- direct the subjects, setup lights, suggest poses or scenes, etc. I love the challenge of applying my own creative vision when that's called for, to give the client a variety of looks and styles.
Welcome to Kenneth Chan Photography! Much of my work and experience is based in Globe, Arizona, and the San Francisco Bay Area. I often photograph families, weddings, and special events. I also love teaching photography workshops and have taught multimedia classes for Stanford University and the Digital Media Academy. And I’m always looking for new ways to expand my craft.
I started my journey in photography when my dad gave me his Nikon SLR (the F-501) to use for high school yearbook. It allowed me to capture the moments that others on the team missed. In college, I was blessed to be an early adopter of a Sony Cyber-shot F55 digital camera and quickly became the dorm historian everywhere I lived. These days, I primarily shoot with my trusty Canon EOS 5D Mark III digital SLR. The technology is changing so fast, enabling us to see the world through the lens in new ways each day. I can’t wait to see what’s just around the corner!
In addition to being a freelance photographer, I’m also a technology consultant, multimedia workshop instructor, and computer repair guy.
I shoot all events with two camera bodies, and my most typical configuration is a Canon 5D Mark III with 24-70mm f/2.8 and Canon 7D with 70-200mm f/2.8. I also have a 16-35mm f/2.8 and 100mm Macro and number of other prime lenses for greater versatility. I know my gear and am well-versed in the technical aspects of photography, and I've taught multimedia classes at Stanford and weeklong workshops with the Digital Media Academy. I can shoot in natural light as well as with off-camera flash in full manual mode. I generally dress in all black for formal events. I have my Prius and GPS support to take me where I need to go.
