Robin Leigh Bio
Studying, performing and teaching people how to dance has been one of Robyn's greatest passions for many years. With a strong foundation in classical ballet and jazz she moved to Toronto in 1994 and began expanding to many other dance styles including tap, African, contact improvisation, contemporary, swing and salsa. She began to narrow her focus mainly to Egyptian Belly Dance in 2002 after becoming intrigued by her first class.
In 2006 she was accepted both as a soloist in Hannan's Bellydance Agency and as a lead dancer in Rhythm of the Nile, Toronto's only professional company dedicated to preserving and sharing the art of authentic Egyptian folkloric dance. With these organizations Robyn spent the next 3 years performing for a wide to full length theatre productions. Robyn's final performance with the company and one of her proudest dance achievements was to portray the role of Samia Gamal, one of Egypt's most beloved dancers, in the
Robyn has also cultivated the technique and joy of teaching, becoming a graduate of both Hadia's Middle Eastern dance teacher's training program and Brian and Faye Foley's Adapt teacher's course for tap and jazz. She attributes many elements of both of these programs to her dynamic and outgoing teaching style, developed over 8 years of instructing students. She places much of her focus in class on breaking down movements clearly and simply, dancing safely and inspiring joy in her students.
Robyn continues to develop her craft, practicing and attending workshops regularly and has been influenced by both performers of the past and present era, and many of her teachers of note, Nada el Masria, Hadia, Hannan Sultan, Aida Noor, Audra Simmons and more. She has had the privilege to both study from and perform with esteemed musicians Dr. George Sawa and Raymond Sarweh of the Traditional Arabic Music Ensemble, and plans to keep dancing until musicians stop playing!
