Professional level classical guitar playing with a polished tone and precision.
CJ Renzi began his guitar studies at age
14 with John Nazarenko, Artist-in
Residence at Skidmore College, from
whom he learned jazz guitar voicings and
progressions. He then studied with Joel
Brown, Guitar Professor at Skidmore
College and Ithaca College in preparation
for college-level classical guitar
studies. CJ received his B.S. and M.S. in
Music Education from the College of St.
Rose where he studied classical guitar
under Tony Sano. While studying with
Mr. Sano, he gave a graduate lecture/recital on Cuban composer, Leo Brouwer. CJ has
also studied with or participated in master classes with Dr. Matthew Hinsley, Frank
Wallace, Dr. Angelo Favis, Dr. Jonathan Dotson, Dr. Isaac Bustos, Chad Ibison, Valerie
Hartzell, Doug James, Dr. Elliot Frank, Las Angeles Guitar Quartet and many others.
As an educator, CJ taught elementary music for seven years in Houston, Texas at Alief
ISD and Katy ISD before opening his own studio in 2005. He now teaches guitar out of
his studio in West Houston where he has forty-plus students. CJ also teaches classical
guitar lessons at Houston Community College, assisting students in preparation for
auditions into four year programs, January 2008-present. CJ began an online Music
Appreciation for Kanawha Valley Community and Technical College in January 2010
and continues to offer the course today.
Composing is more than just a passing interest for Mr. Renzi. As Coordinator of the
Classical Minds Institute and Competition, June 2009, CJ performed an original
composition during his recital. The Festival Director played another of his compositions
in hers.
