Preparing for your photo session
Congratulations! Having a newborn is such an exciting and completely life-changing event!
Scheduling your newborn session
The best time to capture newborns in the cute, scrunched up, sleepy, flexible, newborn poses is from 5-15 days old. After about 20 days old, the chances of getting the "newborn" looking photo is lower but still feasible up to about 4 weeks old, so schedule your session early! Saturdays are my session days, but sometimes other options are available.
Session location
As a mom myself, I know how hard it is to get things going after having a baby! This is why I decided to do my sessions out of my own home, or yours! If you want the session at your home, just make sure you have a nice big window or sliding glass door to use for beautiful natural light. Make sure that you clear any space, like the nursery, of clutter for best photograph results. Often we need to move furniture or other things to make enough room for set up.
The most important thing to remember is to have the heat in the house turned up so that the baby stays nice and warm. Between 75-80 degrees is great! Be prepared; it will be HOT. Even though the heat isn't fun for parents, it keeps the baby sleepy, happy, and comfortable. If it is summer and hot outside, consider doing an outdoor shoot. Lighting is superb during summer months, and it’s warm enough for baby to enjoy being outside!
Preparing your baby for the session
Plan on feeding your baby right before the session starts, not right before you leave home. Don't forget the burps! A gassy baby is a fussy baby! Please loosely diaper your baby so as to not create diaper lines on their skin. Remember this with socks and tight clothing, as well. To get the best poses, you need to have a sleepy baby. Although I always strive to capture some of the darling awake shots, it’s difficult to pose the baby in certain poses while the newborn is awake. My goal is to keep the baby warm, comfortable, asleep, and happy. On the day of the session, keep baby awake a couple of hours before leaving home. If you have difficulty keeping him/her awake, a bath will help.
If you are a nursing mommy, for 24 hours prior to the session, please refrain from spicy or irritating foods like chocolate, milk, or any other things you have noticed make your baby gassy. I highly recommend a pacifier at the session if your baby will take one. Even if you usually do not use a pacifier, please consider having one for baby just for the session.
Babies photograph best in their birthday suit or in just a diaper. Feel free to bring any props that you want to use during your session: blankets made by grandma, a favorite stuffed animal, a musical instrument daddy or mommy plays, memorabilia of any kind, or hats/headbands that you really love.
When you photograph the baby unclothed, be prepared for the baby to pee and/or poo at least once during the session, most likely more! It’s not a matter of if the baby will pee, but when the baby will pee! Don't worry or panic. I always have plenty of wipes, towels, and hand sanitizer on hand.
During the session
I will be doing most of the work at the session, but occasionally I might need help with propping baby up or holding something in place. This is a great job for Daddy or Grandma! Patience is a must! Sometimes posing can take up to 30 minutes. The most important thing to remember is to remain calm and relaxed while someone else plays with the baby for a while. Babies can sense when parents are stressed or nervous, so just relax, kick up your feet, and enjoy. Sessions can take from 2-4 hours, depending on baby's mood and age. Don't stress; we have lots of time! Babies fuss and cry. That is normal. We can feed, rock, cuddle, and soothe baby as long as we need too.
Some parents want to help and be right by their baby during the session. Although I completely understand this, please know you are welcome to sit back, relax, and even take a nap if you'd like. A lot of the parents I work with love this opportunity to catch up on some sleep. I ask them to remain in the sitting area, which is close to where I’m shooting and where they can still see their baby.
Receiving your photos
I will give you a DVD with all the photos from your session. I edit at least 10-15 photos that are included on that DVD. The edits will also be available to view on my blog: (link hidden). You will receive your DVD in the mail within 3 weeks. Rush available upon request (fees may apply).
Don't forget to leave me your address so I can send you your DVD!

Hey! I'm Julie Burr. I grew up in Utah and have since lived in Colorado and West Virginia but am back here in Lehi raising my family of 5 kids. I started doing photography before I was 10. I followed my sister around (who is a wedding photographer) and was her assistant up until I was married in 2003. My husband and I started our family pretty quick and had our last baby, number 5, in 2014. After photographing my own kids I started to get people to ask me to photograph theirs as well, and well, I just couldn't get away from it after that. I love working with kids and capturing them learning about life and new things.
