Biography of 0%DOWN:
The band officially started in January of 2010 with Dylan Maffett and Jesse James, throughout the year 2009 Dylan taught himself how to play the guitar. After a while of Dylan experimenting with guitaring he began to encourage his very close friend Jesse James to get a guitar. That Christmas Jesse got an electric guitar. They were meaning to have a vocalist, guitarist, rythme guitarist, bassist, and drummer for their band. So Dylan began teaching Jesse how to play guitar. In the meantime of Jesse learning how to play guitar, they were trying to recruit musicians that could join the band. They were going to have a girl bassist named Taylor Coulson but it ended up not working out. That month they were trying to recruit, Dylan wrote a handful of songs including Stiffen Fingers, Man of Moon, I Love You, and Doll Pieces.
After weeks of trying to find band members Dylan realized he could play guitar and sing at the same time, that night he wrote the song Trait. He told Jesse about the song and his ability to sing and play guitar in a weight lifting room. Dylan encouraged Jesse to get a bass guitar so the band could be a three piece. That week Jesse borrowed $60 from Andrew Conner a close friend to Dylan and Jesse to afford a bass guitar. That Saturday Jesse stayed the night at Dylan's house to learn more guitar. Dylan was showing Jesse Trait's bassline on his guitar. They were going to go up to a music store to buy a bass guitar. Jesse told his Dad about him borrowing the $60 from Andrew and he didn't support the idea. He wanted Jesse to give the money back on Monday. His dad stopped that day at the music store and bought the bass guitar Jesse was going to get. He arrived at Dylan's house that evening and gave the bass guitar to Jesse saying that he owes him and not Andrew now. That Monday he gave the $60 back to Andrew. Now all they needed was a drummer.
Andrew was a supporter of the band and tried to help them find a drummer. Dylan and Jesse found 4 drummers from their school Josh Smith, Trevor Baker, Ryan Rowland, and Jon Ivy. But none of them worked out, either they were in a band already or they weren't able to join the band for certain reasons. Dylan, Jesse, and Andrew walked around after a school day after and asked anyone they saw if they knew anyone that plays drums. They didn't find anyone after that whole day of searching. They sat on a bench wondering if there was anyone else they could ask, they were losing hope. They then turned to Andrew and asked him if he knew anyone that knew how to play drums, that's where Andrew replied "Well I have a drum set". That's where They asked if Andrew wanted to join the band, he replied "Sure". That day 0%DOWN became an actual band.
Weeks after 0%DOWN got together completly they started off rough. Dylan had very little songs, Jesse was just now learning bass, and Andrew had no experience at all with drumming. Dylan had to rely on simple song writing to make sure the band was getting progress. The first song andrew learned was Man of Moon taught by Dylan. The bands first song all together was Trait. In the first months of the bands existance, they got together very little and didn't take it as seriously as they should. Dylan was still writing songs. After finding new influences including Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, and Guns N' Roses' Slash, he began taking more time into his guitar. As his influences grew more wide, the guitar riffs and layouts were more complex and had more timing to them. He learned how to play faster and used covers to learn how to palm mute and learn more chords. At the time the songwriting expanded and got more difficult, Jesse and Andrew began bettering themselves at their instruments.
As the band evolved and got more serious, they got into the recording world. Dylan brought a tape recorder to practice one day. That is where they recorded the song, Trait. It turned out very well. Weeks after recording Trait they recorded Victim, Psychological Leash, and an untitled song they started. After a year of practicing and getting more serious about the band. In the summer of 2011, they began practicing daily. They worked with Dylan's cousin named Tyler Lentz, using his computer software to mix the audio well. Also they were getting ready for a gig they had set up. They went through their 12 song setlist as much as possible. Between Dylan working at McDonalds and band practice, they had no time to do anything else. 2 weeks before the gig Dylan bought a 15 passenger van for the band. The day of the gig on September 3rd came. They packed all of the band equipment into the van and headed 30 miles down I-30 to Jeromesville. They played at a legion full of drunks and farmers. They opened with Psychological Leash, they did all original songs on their first gig which the audience didn't care for. They tried setting up other gigs at bars and restaurants but it wasn't the right kind of music for them.
In the Fall of 2011 school started and it became harder to fit practice in. They bagan practicing once a week after school. Expanding their setlist with songs including Buzzard, Dead and Gone, Help Me Down, and Morphine. As more songs were brought to the band, basslines, drum beats, and timings got more cleaner and complex. They began working on a full LP.
